United Nations Security Council members gave the green light to a United States-backed measure to lift sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa before his Washington trip the following week.
Sharaa was named provisional head of state after leading a rebel offensive that ousted the previous leader in the final month of 2024, concluding over a decade of domestic strife.
The US representative UN ambassador Mike Waltz said the UN had sent "an emphatic political statement" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a new era" after Assad's removal.
Sharaa was under global penalties in his role as head of the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which was formerly linked to the terrorist network. The US removed HTS from a list of global extremist entities during July.
The UN also removed sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.
Syria's foreign minister welcomed the removal of these restrictions, declaring through digital channels: "The nation shows its gratitude toward America and supportive states for assisting of Syria and its people."
The Syrian leader's Washington trip this coming Monday comes after President Trump remarked that Sharaa achieved "significant advancement" in establishing peace to the war-torn country.
The two leaders convened on their first occasion this past May, when Trump visited Riyadh on a tour of the Middle East.
After that meeting, America's leader characterized him as a "resilient figure" with a "very strong past".
His former militant faction was al-Qaeda's affiliate in Syria until he severed ties back in 2016.
The upcoming meeting is not Sharaa's first trip to America in the current year. This past fall, he emerged as the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to present to the United Nations gathering in Manhattan in almost 60 years.
Throughout his presentation, he said Syria was "reclaiming its rightful place across international circles" while showing support with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
