NUFC has terminated more than 100 annual passes and apologised to supporters for an “administrative error” after tickets sold to tour organisers a decade ago were “only discovered lately”
Newcastle United acted decisively following a thorough investigation into the improper resale of tickets for fixtures at their home ground.
This follows in the wake of a college around 200 miles away succeeding to acquire tickets for the massively in-demand European fixture against Barcelona recently.
Newcastle United clarified that when the new owners assumed control previously, they ended arrangements with commercial partners that permitted them to trade tickets.
Among these was the deal set up ten years prior with a limited number of tour organisers “supporting school groups” - however the club were unaware they were continuing to trade tickets since there was no formal deal with the organisers.
“During a period when we are doing our utmost to safeguard legitimate access for supporters, we want to be completely open and say sorry for this mistake,” the club said.
A number of tickets for the game were bought by the educational institution in the coinciding time that a huge number of fans had been in an digital line for the remaining seats for the highly anticipated fixture.
A representative for the school said they bought them in good faith, after being “approached” by a agent, but the tickets were later cancelled by the club.
The club have now cancelled a overall of 103 memberships in recent days for breaking policies.
Newcastle United clarifies the recent situation is not connected to season ticket holders trading their tickets for the stadium in “this situation”.
Third-party agents bought the memberships in the 2015/16 campaign.
United emphasised that the ongoing usage and unauthorised resale of season tickets at a “inflated cost” was went unnoticed because there was “no formal contract in place for the tour groups”.
“Once notified of this issue, the club took swift measures,” a statement read.
“We have not collected any money exceeding the standard cost of these passes and have promptly released the seats for purchase to fans who have joined the official ballot for forthcoming fixtures.”
The Newcastle United Supporters' Trust earlier “approved” the club “acting decisively to deter and penalise those who may be making a profit from the fanbase”.
“Besides the rise in admission costs, as per our annual survey, one of the biggest concerns for followers is scarce matchday access because of, not only popularity, but the distribution of tickets through external channels or further improper methods,” it commented last week.
