Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any significant honors show approaches, you'll find an outcry for the addition fresh award types to recognize unsung work and satisfy the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge of video game design, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
