The national team halted world champions the Proteas' unbeaten run by completing a 93-run win in an entertaining and competitive first Test in the city of Lahore.

The Proteas, who had a 10-match unbeaten run in the longest format culminated in victory over the Aussies in the WTC final in the month of June, were bowled out for 183 in pursuit of 277.

Starting the day on 51-2, they lost century-maker Tony de Zorzi lbw to pace bowler Afridi to the third delivery of the day to push the tightly balanced run chase in the home team's favor.

Slow left-armer Noman, who took 10-191 in the match, dismissed Stubbs for two and bowled Brevis, who put up a fight with a rapid 54.

Off-spinner Sajid also capitalized on significant spin to end opening batsman Ryan Rickelton's innings - he lasted 145 deliveries for 45 - and Afridi returned in the afternoon session to knock over the lower order with a impressive exhibition of reverse-swing bowling.

He trapped Verreynne leg before for 19 and bowled Subrayen and Kagiso Rabada to seal the victory.

It was both sides' first match of the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle and moves the hosts directly into second place behind leaders Australia.

The win was founded on key performances of 93 by opening batsman Imam and, importantly, all-rounder Agha which lifted them to three hundred and seventy-eight.

After that spinners Noman Ali and Sajid utilized helpful home pitches, as they did in their Test series win over the English team the previous year, to sustain their lead.

The second and last match starts on 20 October.
