Our Top Record of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Claims the Top Spot.

At first glance, this work may look closer to a difficult scholarly quiz than a new pop album from a musician who just had a last single featured a global pop icon. Split across four different movements and voiced in 13 languages, we have a breathtaking symphonic work investigating female mystique, religious transcendence, and bodily transformation, often by way of the prism of different saintly figures. The dissolution of a relationship—a theme handled with raw openness on another major 2025 album—is shot upwards on this record, supported by the constant presence of a major symphony orchestra and contributions from an award-winning composer among a vast roll call of collaborators. Its sheer ambition alone renders the efforts of contemporary pop stars appear rather small.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

That this album manages to escape dry academic posturing feels nearly miraculous, and complete praise going to the artist. While this is not her first album to blend historical sounds with modern styles, its ambitions feel far greater on Lux, with the balancing act far more dramatic. The element that truly raises her fourth album, beyond its complex melodies, dense compositions, and engrained theatricality, is an essential sense of playfulness. Much like the legendary Björk at her peak, there is a wondrous sense to the vocalist's singing that pulls you up in its whirlwind. Even when she is tearing hearts in two, you still want to stay right there through the journey.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

This playful spirit shines clearly on a stunning Italian ballad inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a string-drenched whirlpool for more than four moments. Then, all the music falls silent, to reveal we hear a gleeful laugh and a comment before a comically exaggerated orchestral crescendo crashes down with comedic force. The song then shifts to the wild single driven by racing strings, an imposing choir, and a surprise role from none other than herself.

"The magic of this album is that you never quite understand—nor want to know—where you will go next."

Nearly every song finishes in a totally distinct place from how it began. One moment explores the transient trappings of fame over a delicate orchestration before collapsing in digital chaos. Elsewhere, a song echoing the artist's previous trap-infused style begins off moody and sinister, with prowling beats, until sudden flamenco rhythms and a heavenly chorus arrive to smooth its jagged edges.

The Balance Between Art & Accessibility

A key achievement of the album is navigating the gap between bold innovation and broad appeal. It is no coincidence that it has achieved the artist's highest-charting work to crack the upper reaches of major markets: at its core a suite of truly catchy hits. A song performed primarily in English builds around a refrain that feels to collect more and more nagging melodies as it spirals upward. That feat gets repeated on another powerful track that expands and contracts, weaving multiple tunes as a complex weave.

  • A dance-infused song seduces via its jaunty, Disney-adjacent flair and an anthemic chorus.
  • In its words, it aligns with pop culture impact of contemporary heartbreak anthems, lambasting an ex- partner described as an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals have a painted-on edge, like a storybook figure hiding a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You've won the trophy of disappointment."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Ears

Lux is popular music on a maximalist level, a hungry grasp for capital-A artistry amid of impending AI-generated blankness. It rejects solipsism in favor of glorious elevation, creating a dramatic drama that masterfully controls its built-in ridiculousness. This is an abundant source of buried treasure that requires time to fully mine but doesn't feels like hard work. While some major releases of the year felt like a meager meal, Lux is a sumptuous feast at which the guests around it, some tipsy on sacred drink, flit from conversations about ancient saints, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering grief, and shared gossip about useless men. In essence, it's a modern-day musical from music's truly endlessly inventive practitioner.
